Another Script-Based Ransomware
In the past, I already found some script-based ransomware samples written in Python or Powershell[1]. The last one I found was only a “proof-of-concept” (my guess) but it demonstrates how easy such malware can be developed and how they remain undetected by most antivirus products.
I found a malicious VisualBasic script that attracted my attention. The SHA256 is 8c8ed4631248343f8732a83193828471e005900fbaf144589d57f6900b9c8996 and its VT score is only 3/57![2]. It's no flagged as malicious but, even more, it’s reported as a simple mallicious script.
The obfuscation technique used is simple but pretty effective: The VBS creates a bunch of environment variables that contains encrypted PowerShelll code:

The Environment() parameter specifies the location of the environment variable. In this case, “Process” means that environment variables will be passed to child processes (and not stored in the registry). In this case, it will make the variables available to the second stage, the PowerShell script. In total, 80 “XXX” variables are created. The code to launch the next stage is obfuscated in a long string:

The decoding process is performed through a simple function which extracts the right characters:

Each character is shifted by 3: ’s’ becomes ‘p’, ‘r’ becomes ‘o’, etc. You may guess that it starts with "powershell".

To extract the Base64 data from the VB script, we can use base64dump:

The code contains an “encrypted” variable that contains the next stage. It will be decrypted and passed to IEX to launch the real malware:

I won't cover all the PowerShell code. Here are some capabilities of the ransomware launched via Invoke-Expression:
- It has a kill-switch (exits if the directory $env:PUBLIC + "\OracleKit exists)

- A random extension is generated for encrypted files:

- The C2 server (that will get the encryption key) is hxxp://8619f595a0bd[.]ngrok[.]io/. (The tunnel is down at the moment)
- System is cleaned to prevent a quick restore:

- The ransom note is called READ_ME_NOW.htm" in all directories:
The Onion site mentioned in the ransom note is also unreachable. Also, the attacker mentions that a copy of original files has been saved. That's wrong, there is no exfiltration of data implemented in the script. This sample can't compete with real ransomware but it demonstrates how easy a ransomware can be implemented. And, the victim has a poor security posture, impacts will be the same as "real" ransomware.

distribute malware. Even if the URL listed on the ad shows a legitimate website, subsequent ad traffic can easily lead to a fake page. Different types of malware are distributed in this manner. I've seen IcedID (Bokbot), Gozi/ISFB, and various information stealers distributed through fake software websites that were provided through Google ad traffic. I submitted malicious files from this example to VirusTotal and found a low rate of detection, with some files not showing as malware at all. Additionally, domains associated with this infection frequently change. That might make it hard to detect.
